The 2bdm agency

For over 15 years, we have been working to restore
and promote heritage.

Who we are

An agency committed to heritage, where each project is an encounter between the past and the future.

Founded in 2010 by four architects specializing in heritage restoration – Christophe Batard, Christophe Bottineau, Frédéric Didier, and Jacques Moulin – the 2bdm Architectes agency has set itself the mission of working to preserve architectural and landscape heritage through its unique and multidisciplinary expertise.

Together, they have more than thirty years of experience, making 2bdm Architects one of France's leading firms dedicated to heritage in the broadest sense.

In 2024, the agency is embarking on a new phase with the arrival of new partners: Thomas Clouet and Alexis Muller, chief architects of historic monuments, as well as Stéphane Choisie and Martin Mallard, heritage architects. This new configuration embodies a shared ambition, where high standards meet rigor, and where the past, far from being frozen in time, becomes a source of inspiration for building the future.

The agency adopts a rigorous, methodical approach: analyzing the architecture before any intervention, respecting original materials and combining traditional know-how with contemporary solutions.

Restoration is seen as a cultural and technical act, aimed at preserving heritage and making it functional for future generations.

Our customers are as diverse as the heritage they protect:

• Public sector: local authorities, government departments, public institutions (museums, schools, libraries, etc.)
• Private sector: individuals, companies, associations working to preserve heritage
• Foundations and NGOs: patrons and international institutions involved in large-scale heritage conservation

Our expertise

Restoration is not a simple act of repair; it is a project in itself, carefully considered, well-argued, and designed on the basis of a precise analysis with the aim of bringing the building and its qualities into line with the program for which it is intended.

Heritage, whether public or private, remarkable or discreet, built or landscaped, from the Gallo-Roman era to the 20th century, in urban or rural areas, requires constant vigilance and an informed perspective. Every day, we place it at the heart of our concerns and our commitment. We observe it rigorously, reveal its unique features, and assess its strengths and weaknesses. Through a methodical approach, we identify its pathologies and then design measured interventions, designed to restore it, adapt it to contemporary uses, sometimes convert it, but always to reveal its qualities and preserve its authenticity by guaranteeing it a sustainable future.

We consider heritage to be a precious asset, both fragile and irreplaceable. Each monument, in its uniqueness, bears the traces of a history that is often overlooked. Before any work is carried out, it is important to observe and understand it, and to place it in the artistic and cultural context in which it was created. This careful analysis gives rise to an approach that is both sensitive and respectful. Restoration combines culture and technique to ensure that heritage is passed on: preserving authenticity while responding to current uses and challenges.

We share our passion, knowledge, and expertise with a variety of stakeholders committed to heritage preservation:

  • State institutions and services, local authorities, guardians of collective memory and the preservation of iconic monuments.
  • Private owners, businesses, and associations that work with conviction and commitment to preserve heritage in all its dimensions.
  • Higher education institutions such as the École de Chaillot, associations, and the French Archaeological Society, which actively participate in the transmission and enrichment of knowledge related to the history, architecture, and culture of ancient buildings.

Our scope of work covers all possible interventions: meticulous restoration, respectful rehabilitation and conversion, informed restoration and reconstruction, compliance upgrades and energy efficiency improvements, and custom fittings. We combine traditional expertise with contemporary requirements in terms of sustainability, comfort, and innovation. Each project thus becomes a dialogue between history and modernity, between the memory of places and today's uses.

Heritage specialists
ACMH

Recruited through competitive examinations by the Ministry of Culture, there are currently 34 chief architects for historic monuments working throughout France. Entrusted with a mission of public interest, they provide expertise and project management for buildings classified as Historic Monuments belonging to the State, within a defined geographical area. Beyond this institutional responsibility, they also work on all types of heritage sites, for both public and private clients.

The Heritage Architect / DSA Belleville

Specialists in architectural and urban heritage, there are around 900 heritage architects in France. They are graduates of the École de Chaillot, founded in 1887 by Anatole de Baudot, a disciple of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, with the aim of training experts capable of restoring the buildings that the young Historic Monuments department was then striving to preserve. This school of excellence imparts a rigorous methodology and in-depth knowledge, which are essential for any work on historic buildings.

In addition, the DSA "Architecture and Heritage at ENSA Belleville" also trains architects in the conservation, restoration, and enhancement of built heritage. It combines historical, technical, and regulatory approaches, and develops the ability to analyze, diagnose, and intervene in a respectful and sustainable manner on heritage buildings or sites.
